Robbed before we left :(

You can imagine my IMG_2075shock when 3 days before we were to fly out of Chiang Mai and the morning before the shipping company was coming to the house I discovered early in the morning WE HAD BEEN ROBBED.

I woke up early, came downstairs to get some water and while walking by the TV room I noticed a cushion was a bit off (anal I know) I moved the cushion into place and out from underneath it fell all the contents of my wallet except all the Thai, American and Canadian cash I had in there. OMG it took me about 30 seconds to realize upon looking around more that we had in fact been robbed.

Our house was a disaster with the throws of the big move but I could tell. The sneaky jerks came through our tv room window and got away with a decent score including… Emma’s computer, my big camera and lenses, video camera, smaller camera, a large and extremely heavy basket of thai coins I was taking to the bank worth about 10,000bht. school bags, and other itemIMG_2071s we discovered along the way.

The whole process of calling the police was out of a movie. Through out the day over 12 people had trapst in and out, the same story had been told multiple times to various policeman and finger print ink was everywhere.

With this robbery it was the last push we needed to leave with smiles on our faces as the whole concept of “call 911” does not exist here and in fact if we ever had a real emergency we would be left on our own. This robbery was a learning lessonIMG_2074
for not only us but for our friends and neighbors so at least something good came out of it.

A huge thank you to our dear friend Somporn for all her time translating and helping navigate the Thai police system!!

This experience will not harden us but will keep us on our toes.

A great reminder to count our blessings and lock everything up with us at night 😉
